Lipiview
The LipiView machine measures the thickness of the oily or lipid layer of the tear film.
The lipid layer floats on top of the tear film like oil on water
If the layer is not thick enough then the tears evaporate too easily causing dry eye.
When oil floats on water you will see coloured fringes, the pattern of the coloured fringes can tell you how thick the oily layer is – this is how the LipiView works.
When you look into the LipiView it shines a white light on the tear film on the corneal surface. The light reflecting back forms an interference pattern, called an interferogram. The advanced computer system then captures and records 32 frames per second, in real time.
By analysing the colours in the image the thickness of the lipid layer can be measured.
The scan will also record your blinking pattern to tell if you blink properly.
